Loosen the Strap of the Bible Belt

After hearing about so many things happening in so many of the small town churches I know of, I started to wonder, "why in the world is this stuff happening?" Then I came to the conclusion that I am in the heart of the "Bible Belt", where going to church is as easy as filling up your car at a gas station.  It's so easy to get wrapped up in "the thing to do on Sunday", instead of actually having a committed relationship to Jesus Christ. A good example of this, is the attendance for Easter and Christmas services. It's what southern gentleman and southern belles are supposed to do; go to church and try and stay awake during a 30 minute sermon on the "same 'ol stuff". Another thing is, "it's what we're supposed to do". WRONG! Going to church is definitely a key element to having a strong relationship with the Big Guy, but that doesn't make you a Christian. The actual word, Christian, means "little Christ". Think about that. It's almost hard to swallow. We will never live up to the holiness of Jesus, not even close. So does this mean the entire Christian population is striving to be like a man we will never ever come close to resembling? Yes, we most certainly are or we should be. We have to die daily, sacrificing our lives to follow God's son, the one that hung on a cross for OUR sins. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me"(Matthew 16:24). Now the question is, when will it stop? When will normality become humility?

  1. I agree. I hear so many people calling themselves Christians and yet living nothing like Christ. Church attendance for them is out of obligation NOT out of a love for God and a desire to grow closer to Him. Bible study and prayer time are "spiritual" terms that most Christians rarely actually have as part of their lifestyle. We're so self absorbed. Everything is all about us...even the time we spend "worshiping" God is about us...When it become like this...and how do we change it?
